Man With Volcano
When Jose Mejia Vides was 14, the JabalÃÂ volcano, close to San Salvador, erupted, causing earthquakes that destroyed buildings in the capital city. Â The Mejia Vides family farm was ruined in the eruption, and the family moved further out to an area called Los Planes.
This woodcut, made as an illustration for a book of Salvadorean folk stories almost 30 years later, takes a lighter view of the event. Â A farmer smiles while behind him ashes spew from the erupting volcano.
